Although I think I can certainly be influenced by and enjoy what's trendy and in fashion, I am more a fan of what is classic and timeless.  This is why I love mermaids.  As far as I'm concerned, Mermaids have always been "in".  They have been around as long as the human imagination, inspiring countless generations through literature and art of all kinds.
